The solar industry is constantly changing. It can be hard to know where to look for the latest news and insights. Here I will summarize the trade groups, media outlets, and folks in the industry with valuable things to say:
SEIA – Solar Energy Industries Association. SEIA is the national trade group supporting solar. They advocate for solar at a federal level and make recommendations to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Most recently, SEIA and other clean energy trade associations urged FERC to improve backlogs and reduce costs associated with interconnections.
CALSSA – California Solar and Storage Association. Even if you do not live in the golden state, solar policy in CA is relevant to the solar policy in the nation. There is presently a net energy metering decision that is being reviewed by the California Public Utilities Commission and it could have severe repercussions for solar in the US. You can join CALSSA’s mailing list HERE.
Beyond SEIA and CALSSA, many other states have their own solar industry groups, like Missouri and Oregon. Check out the State-by-State map to learn more about solar in your home state. You can even consider joining a board or contributing in other ways to your state’s solar industry group.
Canary Media – formerly Greentech Media, is one of the best independent media sites devoted to reporting on the energy transition. They cover solar, storage, wind, EVs, and other clean energy related topics. Recently, they covered the various minerals required in fossil fuel and alternative energy methods, emphasizing the new challenges we will face on mineral extraction supply chains.
SolarWakeup – a daily newsletter highlighting relevant articles in the solar space. Sources include PV-Magazine, Utility Dive, Reuters, and more. Yann Brandt, the founder of SolarWakeup, has been distributing this newsletter since 2012. As the former CEO of QuickMount PV and board member of CALSSA, Yann is an industry veteran who has a lot to say about what is going on in solar today.
Another voice to follow is Jigar Shah. Jigar Shah is the Director for the Loan Program Office at the U.S. Department of Energy. Previously he was President and co-founder of Generate Capital, a venture capital firm for renewable energy technologies. Jigar has been in the industry since 2000 and is a well respected voice in solar.
Staying in touch with policy updates or other novel changes to the solar will help keep you informed and ready to adapt to our evolving industry.
